After much trial and error many different efforts are working well for American Indian tribes including the Citizen Potawatomi Nation in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The tribe has been among the most progressive thinking of tribes when it comes economic development.

Among the most powerful businesses tribes have gotten into is gaming. Like a lot of tribes the Citizen Potawatomi Nation gaming concern heads their business efforts. Firelake Grand Casino is among the leading gaming locations in Oklahoma. It draws much of its attendance from close by Oklahoma City and also attracts many from outside of the state. The tribe also owns a grocery. The full-service FireLake Discount Foods is over eighty thousand square feet and enhances with a physical building some of the other tribal enterprises. The FireLake grocery store has all the services to serve as a principal shopping destination for Shawnee, Oklahoma. It has all a person would expect in a grocery store like a bakery and a deli.

Citizen Potawatomi Nation economic development does not stop with these businesses. They have a golf course and miniature golf. They have a promotional products business that can do screen printing and embroidery. Another economic development favorite is a travel plaza, which the tribe also has. Still, their economic development efforts are not limited to tribal businesses.
